Why Doesn't Ibiza Have Street Names? The Island Works Differently!
One of the questions we are asked most often as a holiday rental agency in Ibiza is:
Could you please send me the exact address for Google Maps?
For many visitors, it comes as a surprise when we explain that a traditional postal address often doesn't exist. But that's part of what makes Ibiza so unique. The island works differently in many ways compared to mainland Europe - and that includes navigation.
Why Don't Many Houses in Ibiza Have a Proper Address?
Around 75% of all holiday homes, fincas and villas in Ibiza do not have a uniquely identifiable postal address. Especially in the countryside, you'll often find neither street names nor house numbers like those commonly used across Europe or North America.
Many rural roads do have official names in the land registry, but these are rarely used in everyday life and are often missing from navigation systems. House numbers frequently don't exist at all, or several properties share the same postal address.
That's why a traditional postal address is often far less useful than an exact GPS location.
GPS Instead of Street Names
For this reason, after your booking you will receive precise GPS coordinates or a Google Maps pin that takes you directly to your accommodation. This method is far more accurate than a postal address and has been successfully used in Ibiza for many years.
In most cases, your navigation system will guide you directly to the entrance gate of your villa without any problems.
Depending on the property, we may also provide entrance photos, reference points, nearby landmarks or detailed driving instructions. Even first-time visitors to Ibiza usually find their holiday home with ease.
Why Don't We Publish the Exact Location on Our Website?
On our website we intentionally display only the approximate location of each property.
There are several important reasons for this:
- Protecting the owners' privacy
- Improving the security of the holiday homes
- Preventing unannounced visits
- Protecting exclusive private properties
Many villas are rented only for a few weeks each year and remain private residences for the rest of the time. For this reason, we provide the exact GPS coordinates only after a confirmed booking.
Things Used to Be Even Simpler!
Long before smartphones and Google Maps existed, local residents found their homes without any difficulty.
A typical set of directions might have sounded like this:
"Drive from Santa Gertrudis towards Sant Miquel. After 2.5 kilometres, turn right, then left at the large carob tree, pass the blue stone and you'll find the third white gate on the right."
It may sound almost romantic today, but these directions worked remarkably well for decades.
Even today, many Ibicencos still navigate using distinctive trees, stone walls, old wells or neighbouring houses rather than street names.
