Space Ibiza - A Tribute to One of the World's Most Legendary Nightclubs
Few names are as closely associated with the history of electronic music as Space Ibiza. For more than 25 years, the club ranked among the world's most famous and influential nightclubs. For generations of DJs, music lovers and holidaymakers, Space was far more than just a nightclub - it was a way of life, a meeting place for the international clubbing community and, for many, the very reason to travel to Ibiza.
When the club closed its doors in 2016, it marked the end of an era that had helped shape the island's identity. Even today, many years later, the name Space Ibiza remains unforgettable to electronic music fans around the globe.
The story of Space began in 1986 in Playa d'en Bossa, just a few minutes from Ibiza Airport. In its early years, the venue was considerably smaller than it would later become. However, its location close to the airport created one of its most distinctive features: aircraft passed low overhead every few minutes as they approached or departed the runway, creating an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world.
What might have been considered a nuisance elsewhere became one of Ibiza's most iconic experiences. The low-flying aircraft passing directly above the famous terrace became just as much a part of Space as the music itself.
The name Space is inseparable from Pepe Roselló. Under his leadership, the club evolved into a global institution. Roselló recognised early on that Ibiza could offer far more than traditional discos and late-night parties. He introduced extended opening hours, innovative music programmes and some of the world's finest DJs.
At the same time, he created a venue where people from every corner of the world could come together to celebrate music, regardless of nationality, age or language. This openness transformed Space into an icon of international club culture and a meeting place for people united by their passion for electronic music.
Among its most legendary events were the famous daytime parties. While most clubs only came alive after dark, Space was already buzzing throughout the afternoon and often continued well into the following morning. Above all, the world-famous terrace became the stuff of legend.
As the sun slowly set, a passenger aircraft roared just metres above the crowd and a world-class DJ took control of the decks, creating an atmosphere that many visitors still describe as unlike anything they have experienced before or since.
Over the years, almost every major name in electronic music performed at Space. Artists including Carl Cox, David Morales, Sven Väth, Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez, Luciano, Richie Hawtin, John Digweed, Sasha and Fatboy Slim all became part of the club's extraordinary history.
Carl Cox, in particular, became a living legend at Space. His Tuesday residency was regarded as one of the highlights of every Ibiza summer for well over a decade, attracting clubbers from every continent. For many visitors, experiencing Carl Cox at Space was the defining moment of their holiday.
Yet Space was never simply another nightclub. It became a meeting place for DJs, producers, artists, celebrities and music lovers alike. Friendships were formed, careers were launched and new musical trends emerged within its walls.
Many DJs still describe performing at Space as one of the greatest achievements of their careers. Playing there meant joining the very pinnacle of the international club scene. Countless music productions, live recordings and legendary DJ sets helped establish Space as one of the most respected names in dance music worldwide.
As the years passed, Ibiza itself began to change. Luxury hotels appeared, property prices soared and regulations became increasingly strict. At the same time, the island's nightlife continued to evolve. Although Space remained hugely successful, commercial and legal pressures steadily increased.
The club's famous terrace had to be redesigned several times to comply with new noise regulations. Many long-time regulars felt that some of its original magic had inevitably been lost. Nevertheless, Space remained one of the world's most respected and influential clubs right until its final season.
On 2 October 2016, the legendary Closing Fiesta finally took place. Thousands of loyal fans gathered to say goodbye to a venue that had become a second home for so many. DJs from around the world returned for one last performance, former staff reunited and countless visitors travelled to Ibiza especially to be part of this unforgettable farewell.
The Closing Party lasted for many hours and became an emotional farewell unlike almost any other in clubbing history. Few nightclub closures have attracted such worldwide attention or left such a lasting impression on the global electronic music community.
The closure of Space was not the result of declining popularity, but rather a change in ownership. Once the lease came to an end, the club was unable to continue operating from its iconic location. The building was subsequently completely refurbished and later reopened under a different name.
For many loyal fans, however, it was never a true replacement. Although the Space name disappeared from the façade, it continues to live on in the memories of everyone fortunate enough to experience it.
The influence of Space on international club culture can hardly be overstated. Genres such as House, Tech House, Progressive House, Minimal and Techno evolved alongside the club's history and found a truly global audience within its walls over several decades.
Many DJs chose Space as the first place to test their latest productions. Tracks that proved successful on Ibiza often found their way into clubs around the world only weeks later. Numerous club concepts, festival brands and event series were inspired by the remarkable success of Space Ibiza.
Visitors to Ibiza today can still enjoy an extraordinary nightlife scene featuring world-famous venues such as Hï Ibiza, Ushuaïa, Pacha and Amnesia. Yet many long-time Ibiza lovers continue to say the same thing: there was simply nothing quite like Space.
It was never about luxury or size alone. What made Space truly special was its atmosphere. People from every corner of the world danced together beneath the open sky, sharing unforgettable moments and feeling part of something genuinely unique.

Although Space Ibiza closed its doors forever in 2016, its legacy lives on. Millions of people cherish unforgettable memories of this extraordinary venue. The music, the friendships, the spectacular sunrises, the aircraft passing overhead and countless iconic DJ sets created an experience that is unlikely ever to be repeated.
Electronic music has continued to evolve, Ibiza has changed and new clubs have emerged. Yet Space remains a symbol of one of the island's greatest eras—a time when freedom, music and togetherness came together in a way that defined Ibiza for an entire generation.
