Air Berlin: A Tribute to One of the Most Beloved Airlines to Ibiza
Air Berlin - A Tribute to an Airline That Shaped Ibiza
For millions of travellers, Air Berlin was much more than just an airline. It marked the beginning of the best weeks of the year, the first step towards a long-awaited holiday, and for countless Ibiza lovers, it was the preferred way to reach the island for decades. With its iconic red-and-white aircraft, Air Berlin brought millions of visitors safely and reliably to Ibiza, playing a vital role in shaping the island's tourism.
Here at Ibiza Haus, we also have many wonderful memories of Air Berlin. Since our company was founded in 1999, countless guests have arrived on the island with this airline. The moment an Air Berlin aircraft touched down, holidays officially began for families, couples and friends looking forward to unforgettable days on Ibiza.
Founded in 1978, Air Berlin grew to become Germany's second-largest airline. It was especially popular thanks to its extensive network of direct flights connecting Germany, Austria and Switzerland with the Balearic Islands. Cities such as Düsseldorf, Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Stuttgart and Vienna enjoyed regular non-stop flights to Ibiza, making the island more accessible and affordable than ever before.
Few airlines were as closely connected to the Balearic Islands as Air Berlin. Mallorca served as one of its main hubs, while Ibiza benefited enormously from the airline's dense summer schedule. Throughout the holiday season, the distinctive red-and-white aircraft became a familiar sight at Ibiza Airport. Many returning visitors still remember the friendly cabin crews, the welcoming onboard service and that unforgettable first glimpse of Ibiza's coastline shortly before landing.
Behind the scenes, however, Air Berlin faced growing financial challenges. Rising debt, several acquisitions, an increasingly complex route network and fierce competition from low-cost carriers placed enormous pressure on the airline. In August 2017, Air Berlin filed for insolvency, and on 27 October 2017, its final scheduled flight took off - an emotional farewell for employees, loyal passengers and everyone who had grown up travelling with the airline.
For Ibiza, the end of Air Berlin also marked the end of an era. Many direct connections disappeared overnight before gradually being replaced by airlines such as Eurowings, Discover Airlines, Condor, Ryanair and easyJet. Yet for many visitors, their fondest memories of travelling to Ibiza will always be linked to Air Berlin.
Air Berlin may not have been Europe's largest or most modern airline, but it was reliable, approachable and, for many travellers, simply part of the holiday experience. Those who arrived on Ibiza aboard an Air Berlin flight often still remember that magical moment of stepping out into the warm Mediterranean air, smelling the pine trees and knowing that their island holiday had finally begun.
Although the airline is now part of aviation history, it continues to live on in the memories of millions of travellers. For us, Air Berlin will always remain an important part of Ibiza's tourism story - an airline that safely brought generations of holidaymakers to this beautiful island.
Thank you, Air Berlin - for countless flights, millions of holiday memories and so many unforgettable arrivals on Ibiza.
Welcome to Ibiza.
PS: On 27 October 2017, Air Berlin operated its final scheduled flight. With the end of its operations, one of Germany's best-known airlines disappeared from the skies - and for many travellers to Ibiza, it marked the end of a cherished chapter in their holiday memories.
